Team West Indies

Also known as the Windies, the West Indies are a multinational cricket team made up of players from 15 Caribbean territories. They are one of the most successful teams in history, having won the ODI World Cup as well as the WorldT20 twice. Cricket has been played in the West Indies since 1890s and they were granted Test status is 1926, becoming only the 4th Test playing nation in the world.

They registered their first Test victory over England in 1950 and also won the series 3-1. Despite having some great players, the 1950s and 1960s were a period of underachievement until they changed form a white-dominated side to a black-dominated side under the captaincy of Gary Sobers.

In the 1970s, under the captaincy of Clive Lloyd, they became the best team in Tests and ODIs for close to two decades. They had great players in batsman in Viv Richards and also boasted the infamous fast-bowling quartet of Michael Holding, Andy Roberts, Colin Croft and Malcolm Marshall. These players helped the Windies rule Test cricket and also win back to back ODI World Cups in 1975 and 1979. They won 11 consecutive Test matches in the 1984 and also inflicted two 5-0 whitewashes on England.

In the 1990s and 2000s, cricket declined in the West Indies because of mismanagement by the cricket board and an overall economic collapse in the Caribbean. But Brian Lara was one of the biggest proponents of the game at this time and apart from starring in both Tests and ODIs, he also holds the record for an unbeaten 400, the highest individual score in a Test match. The Windies won the 2004 Champions Trophy and finished runners up in the 2006 edition but it was only the advent of T20 that helped them regain some of their lost glory.

Chris Gayle is the greatest T20 batsman the world has seen so far but his international performances continue to be affected by politics with the board. They won the 2012 World T20 and won the tournament again in 2016 but as a whole, the quality of cricket in West Indies continues to suffer.
