Team Pakistan

Pakistan received Test status in 1950 and played their first ever Test match against India the same year. Before the creation of Pakistan in 1947, several Pakistani players have represented India in Tests. Over the decades, they have boasted teams with talented individuals but it is often discipline and off field issues that have hampered their progress.

It was the introduction of ODI cricket that helped Pakistan become a force to reckon with. Their first noteworthy match is the 1986 Austral-Asia Cup when Javed Miandad hit a six off the last ball of the match to beat India in the final.

Pakistan won the 1992 ODI World Cup under the leadership of the legendary Imran Khan. Some of the players in his squad like Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Inzamam-Ul-Haq and Saeed Anwar would go on to achieved legendary status.

Under Wasim Akram with the heroics of Shoaib Akhar – who at one point was the world’s fastest bowler – Pakistan reached the final of the 1999 World Cup as well but lost to Australia. Their lowest moment arrived at the 2007 World Cup where they were knocked out by debutants Ireland. Their coach Bob Woolmer was founded dead in his hotel room following the defeat and foul play was suspected initially.

Pakistan recovered from that blow and reached the final of the 2007 World T20. They would go on to win the tournament in 2009, beating Sri Lanka in the final.

Terrorism has affected cricket in Pakistan with teams refusing to tour the country, especially after the 2009 attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore. Pakistan have been forced to play their home matches in UAE and Dubai after that incident but the situation has improved with teams willing to tour the country again in recent years.

Incidents of spot fixing and ball tampering have also cost Pakistan, with players getting banned from international cricket on more than one occasion. But cricket in the country had some respite when they won the 2017 Champions Trophy, beating arch-rivals India in the final.
