England won by 57 runs

ABOUT THE MATCH

England have started the 3 match series on the front foot, winning the first Test in Galle by a mammoth 211 runs.

Match Preview

32 Tests have been played between England and Lanka. England have won 13 while Lanka have won 8 with 11 ending in a draw. The win at Galle was England’s first overseas win in 14 matches, their longest winless streak away from home.

iconSri Lanka Team News

Rangana Herath has now retired from Tests which means another long chapter in Lankan cricket history is over. Malinda Pushpakumara who has played 2 Tests for Lanka is set to join the squad as a replacement. More worryingly for them, Akila Dananjaya has been reported for a suspect bowling action in the first Test. He is required to undergo a test on his action within 14 days but until the result is out, he is free to bowl in international cricket.

In yet another blow for Lanka, skipper Dinesh Chandimal has been ruled out after suffering a groin injury in the first Test. He could miss the third Test as well. Pacer Suranga Lakmal will be captain in his place and uncapped batsman Charith Asalanka has been called in as a replacement.

In what could be another mental blow for the hosts, Charith Senanayake has resigned from his position of team manager for personal reasons. Jeryl Woutersz, who has previously been the Lankan team manager, has been named as his replacement.

iconEngland Team News

Batsman Moeen Ali has been faring badly and could be replaced. Jonny Bairstow is back to full fitness and could make a comeback in this match. But it is unlikely that he will resume wicketkeeping duties with Ben Foakes most likely set to continue behind the stumps.

Batsman Ollie Pope did not play the first Test and seemed unlikely to play this one as well so instead of him warming the bench, he has been flown to the UAE to play for the England Lions against Pakistan A in all formats.

Pitch Conditions

There are predictions for rain on 3 of the 5 days of the Test match which means we could see frequent interruptions at the Pallekele International Stadium. The wet outfield will making batting difficult especially in the fourth innings.

Toss Prediction

The team winning the toss is likely to bat first.

Our Match Prediction

If weather permits, England will win this Test as well and seal the series.
