New Zealand won by 35 runs

ABOUT THE MATCH

After the hosts registered a 3-0 whitewash over the hapless Lankans in the ODI series, the two teams will square off for a one off T20 international in Auckland. Form and momentum are both with the Kiwis.

Match Preview

New Zealand and Sri Lanka have met 15 times in T20 internationals. Both teams have won 7 matches apiece while 1 encounter ended without a result.

iconNew Zealand Team News

Regular skipper Kane Williamson has been rested which means Tim Southee will be the captain in the match at Auckland. Along with Williamson, Trent Boult and Colin de Grandhomme have also been granted a rest. But the New Zealanders still have plenty of firepower in their arsenal as Henry Nicholls and Martin Guptill will be playing. Ross Taylor who has been in fine form in the ODI series will hope to translate that in this one off match while Colin Munro who struggles in ODIs is absolutely ruthless in the shortest format. He will hope to make this encounter count.

Jimmy Neesham had made a comeback to the international scene during the ODI series and he was in good touch as well. But he will have to sit out of this match due to a groin strain. Doug Bracewell will play instead of him. Bracewell had initially been part of the ODI squad but not the T20I squad.

Despite that setback, there is still plenty of talent in the Kiwi ranks with Lockie Ferguson and Ish Sodhi also in the squad.

iconSri Lanka Team News

Just like in the ODI series, Lasith Malinga will be the skipper of Sri Lanka though he will hope for a more improved performance from his team. Despite some cameos, they were hapless with both bat and ball and will need to put on a much better show if they are to stand a chance in this match.

Opener Sadeera Samarawickrama, who was dropped from the ODI squad, has been recalled for this match, in place of the injured Angelo Mathews. Veteran leg spinner Seekuge Prasanna and veteran batsman Asela Gunaratne who were part of the ODI series have been included in the T20 squad as well.

In the bowling department, Akila Dananjaya will continue to miss out due to a suspension because of his bowling action.

With Suranga Lakmal dropped, the pace bowling department will comprise of Nuwan Pradeep, Dshmantha Chameera, Kasun Rajitha and Lahiru Kumara, along with Malinga of course.

Pitch Conditions

Eden Park is another fast bowler’s paradise so the hosts will hope for another star performance from their pacers. The Lankans also have seam bowlers in their ranks but they were horribly out of form in the ODIs. They will hope this one off T20 is different. Cloudy skies expected in Auckland but dew will be a factor in the second innings.

Toss Prediction

The team winning the toss will elect to field first.

Our Match Prediction
