ABOUT THE MATCH

Match Preview

The first match in Birmingham had everything you could ask for from a Test match with both teams in sight of victory until the very last wicket. The match went into the first session of Day 4 and India will feel very aggrieved at having lost out despite getting so close. There will be major batting concerns for both teams going into the second Test at Lord’s.

iconEngland Team News

Ben Stokes will miss the second match due to his court case which means Chris Woakes come in to the squad. Dawid Malan has been replaced by Ollie Pope.

Batting is a major concern for England. Alistair Cook is yet to get going in the series, having been undone twice in the first Test by two brilliant deliveries from R. Ashwin. But Joe Root, Sam Curran and Jonny Bairstow did get going which is promising but England will also be worried about Jos Butler’s form.

In the bowling department, England look good with Jimmy Anderson bowling well and Stuart Broad getting better as the first match progressed. Sam Curran also excelled with the ball and has sealed a Starting XI spot for the time being.

iconIndia Team News

India’s batting was an absolute nightmare in the first Test and they were in the hunt only thanks to the brilliant Virat Kohli. Shikhar Dhawan, Murali Vijay and KL Rahul also desperately need to justify their selection. Dropping CheteshwarPujara for the first Test was a very poor decision and India need to bring him back if they need to strengthen their batting. Also Ajinkya Rahane is beginning to seem like a liability overseas.

India also need to decide whether to play two fast bowlers, two spinners and Pandya as the all-rounder or three pacers and two spinners. Jaspreet Bumrah will be fit in time for this match but it is unlikely that he will be picked before the third Test. Umesh Yadav could be dropped in favour of Kuldeep Yadav but Kohli has been known to surprise you with his selection.

Pitch Conditions

Pitch and Conditions:

The forecast suggests slight chance of rain on the first two days followed by more showers on the next three days but rain is very unlikely to interrupt play throughout the day. Expect cloudy skies, gloomy conditions, in-swinging deliveries and frequent interruptions.

The pitch may have some grass on it but will most likely support spin. Batting on Day 1 will be tough and will get easier on Day 2 and 3 before getting tougher on the last two days.

Toss Prediction

Toss Prediction:

Batting first will be tough but since the pitch will be a total nightmare to bat on in the last two days, expect the team that wins the toss to bat first.
