Australia won by 146 runs

ABOUT THE MATCH

India registered a narrow 31 run victory in the first Test to take a 1-0 lead in the series and also win the opening match in a Test series in Australia for the very first time. They will look to build on that while Australia will hope to draw level.

Match Preview

As of now, Australia and India have played 95 Tests, with Australia winning 41 and India winning 27. 26 matches have ended in a draw while one match was tied.

Usman Khawaja could open the innings with Marcus Harris. Aaron Finch is a T20 specialist and could only muster a combined total of 11 runs in the 2 innings of the first Test. Shaun Marsh, Peter Handscomb and Travis Head will continue to play in the middle order. Head was impressive and Marsh also returned to form with a flurry of runs. Handscomb is likely to continue only because Australia don’t have specialist alternatives at the moment.

As captain, batsman and wicketkeeper, Tim Paine will be a man under immense pressure at the moment. He didn’t impress as keeper or runscorer and his captaincy has also come under scrutiny. If he loses the second Test, his team will not be able to win the Border-Gavaskar trophy and he could even lose his captaincy.

Mitchell Marsh was left out of the Starting XI in the first Test but they could bring him back as the all-rounder can provide the right balance with bat and ball. While the Aussie bowlers did well, they need more runscorers at the tail end. Spinner Nathan Lyon impressed with 8 wickets in Adelaide but he couldn’t lead his side to victory. He tried his best with the bat too but in the end Australia fell a little short.

Pacers Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood bowled brilliantly and between them picked up 9 wickets in the match. Pat Cummins however went wicketless in the second innings and the Indian batsmen seemed to be able to handle his bowling. Paine could drop him and bring in debutant Chris Tremain. It would be a high pressure match to make a debut but the youngster would bring in an element of uncertainty. Peter Siddle is also an option but being injury prone, he might not be risked in a match like this.

iconIndia Team News

India will have to make a couple of changes to their winning lineup after Rohit Sharma and R Ashwin picked up injuries ahead of the second Test. Rohit was listless in both the innings and he could be replaced by Hanuma Vihari. But Ashwin’s absence will be a bigger blow. He had picked up 6 wickets in the match and also had a crucial first innings partnership that helped India post a respectable total. India could either opt for another spinner in Ravindra Jadeja or might go with a fourth pacer in Bhuvneshwar Kumar or Umesh Yadav.

KL Rahul and Murali Vijay are likely to continue to opening the innings for India. After perishing cheaply in the first innings, they did well to give India a good start in the second. While Rahul played some good strokes, Vijay looked far from his best. But with Prithvi Shaw still not 100% fit, the Indian camp are unlikely to risk him and will continue with these two.

Cheteshwar Pujara was the architect of the Adelaide win with colossal performances in both innings. He will look to continue in the same vein. Virat Kohli managed just 37 runs in the match which is a very poor return for the best batsman in the world. He will look to get some runs under his belt in Perth. Ajinkya Rahane threw his wicket away in the first innings but more than made up for it in the second. Rishabh Pant made quick cameos in both innings and pouched a record equaling 11 catches in the match. India will expect more of the same from him.

The Indian pace trio of Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah took their time easing into the match but finished with a combined 14 scalps in the match. They’re the ones who led India to a memorable win and they have to do it again.

Pitch Conditions

The Perth pitch is expected to be bouncy and will support the pacers. There will be something in there for the spinners as well. Batsmen from both teams have their task cut out and it depends on which set of batsmen put on enough on the board for their bowlers to defend.

Toss Prediction

Expect the team winning the toss to elect to bat.

Our Match Prediction

India are favourites to win at Perth and take an unassailable 2-0 lead.
